Dr. John Vig assumes the office as the 47th president of the IEEE on 1 January, 2009. As president, he will serve as chief executive officer and preside at all IEEE Board of Directors meetings. An IEEE Life Fellow, he has been an active IEEE volunteer for more than 30 years.

Vig served as Founding President of the IEEE Sensors Council (2000-2001), which led to the creation of the IEEE Sensors Journal and a conference, IEEE SENSORS, which attracts 600 participants annually. Prior to the formation of the IEEE Sensors Council, Vig served as president of the IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control Society. A member of the IEEE Board of Directors from 2002-2003 and in 2005, his past Board positions include director of the signals and applications division and vice president, Technical Activities. Vig has also chaired several IEEE conferences.

At the U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Research, Development, and Engineering Center in Fort Monmouth, N.J., Dr. Vig guided the development of quartz crystal resonators for electronics applications including atomic clocks and sensors. He is currently working as a consultant with System Planning Corporation and as a technical advisor to SiTime Corp., a venture capital funded start-up. Additionally, since 1997, Vig has served as a technical advisor to program managers at the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency for programs ranging from micro- and nanoresonators to chip-scale atomic clocks.

Vig holds 55 patents. He has also authored or co-authored more than 100 publications, including nine book chapters. Vig is the past recipient of the IEEE Cady Award and the IEEE Sawyer Award. He has served as the Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control (UFFC) Society, and is a past recipient of the UFFC-S Distinguished Service Award and Achievement Award, and the Sensors Council Meritorious Service Award.

When not working as a volunteer for the IEEE, Vig serves as a volunteer on the Environmental Commission and as a trustee for the Friends of the Library in his hometown of Colts Neck, N.J. Vig came to the United States in 1957 from his native Hungary. He holds a Bachelor of Science from the City College of New York and a doctorate from Rutgers University, both in physics. He has been married to his wife Arianna for 44 years and they are both avid ballroom dancers.
